Pro JYM by JYM Supplement Science seems to be ahead of the curve with other brands. It has 4 sources of protein (whey protein isolate, micellar casein, egg albumin, and milk protein isolate) that release at 3 different times which helps make sure your recovery process is covered from all bases, from right after your workout, to when you hit the bed after a long day - which is when your body truly goes into recovery mode (sleep is key).
It's mainly a post-work mix, but can be used at any time also. Like we said, it has 3 sources of protein which release at 3 different times - and when we say release, we mean your body digests those proteins either faster or slower. Since milk protein isolate is 20% whey protein and 80% micellar casein, Pro JYM is really broken down into three main categories: Whey protein for fast release, egg albumin for medium release, and micellar casein for slow release.
Why are these 3 different releases important? Research has shown that when you add medium-digesting and slow-digesting proteins to whey, muscle protein synthesis remains elevated for longer than when using whey by itself. Since muscle protein synthesis leads to muscle growth, elevating muscle protein synthesis for longer can have a significant impact on your overall gains. Research also shows that people who add slow-digesting casein protein to a whey protein shake around their workouts see greater muscle growth over time than people taking whey exclusively.
Quick note: If you find the brand name "JYM" cheesy, it might help to let you know it's more than just a play of words/letters. The founders name is Jim! Jim Stoppani, PhD, that is.
Cost - 7
It's pricey compared to most protein supplements, but that's what you get when you mix 3 quality protein sources with quality ingredients. 4lbs can go for about $40USD, or if you're Canadian, it's priced high at $80. Ouch!
Taste - 9
Couldn't be closer to each of their flavours. Banana cream pie, smores, etc. All are great tasting and not too sweet (like some other mixes can be guilty of). Fairly impressive how JYM has perfected the taste without compromising anything else like the texture, which is also on point.
Mixabilty - 8
Probably one of the top mixes I've tired for mixing. Just 10-15 seconds of shaking will be more than enough. No clumping, disperses evenly, and mixing it with just water still creates a great texture to the overall drink.
Effect - 9
After a solid 2 months of being on this, I've noticed great results, especially after switching from a poor whey protein mix (which I will not name). I've actually noticed a much faster recovery rate after each training session (lifting, running, and cycling). And of course, with progressive lifting sessions, some nice new lean gains have come into play since switching.
Overall - 9
This is a solid post-workout mix. Couldn't be more of a fan of how Pro JYM includes whey and casein together - making it super easy to take both effective proteins. It's also comforting to know only quality ingredients are being used - after all, Jim's name is on the line. It can be expensive, but if you're gonna put the work in, you better make sure you make the most of it.
It's great for all types of athletes since the ingredients only focus on building lean muscle, and doesn't offer crazy high values of any supplements. JYM is also known for not spiking their mixes (using cheaper amino acids, etc.) and by not using misleading/abbreviated formulas (using proper dosing of all ingredients, but only includes a few ingredients). JYM includes all ingredients and the amount in the mix.
Great mix of 3 different protein sources.
Great tasting flavours that are accurate.
Can be expensive, depending on your region.
